Cruella is brilliant, bad, and well just a little bit mad. However, she spoke to me on so many levels. As someone who has had her chronic illness journey turned upside down I understood Cruella when her life changed.
Cruella as she becomes starts her journey and life as Estella a girl misunderstood for her uniqueness. As life goes on for Estella she learns some life lessons that not only help her survive but also become a force to be reckoned with. These lessons are ones we too can learn from.
5 Valuable Life Lessons Cruella Can Teach Us All
Lesson 1 ~ Embrace What Makes You Different
From the moment Estella arrives in this world she knows she is different. In the opening scenes she is quoted as saying “From the very beginning, I’ve always made a statement.”
Not only did she know she felt different but her sense of style and her temperament showed it. Her mother trying to help her to fit in encouraged her to hide her uniqueness. To ignore what made her different.
Many of us do the same. To fit into a mold that society has created for us we hide our true selves. We want so badly to fit in or to be liked that we turn ourselves inside out to be what others want. For years I hid my chronic illness because I felt it made others uncomfortable. It wasn’t until I embraced who I was and shared my story that I truly shined. In that moment of being truly me that I was able to help others and shine because I embraced myself.
It is when Estella(Cruella) embraces her uniqueness that she shines and becomes a star.
Lesson 2 ~ True Friends are Your Family
When Estella finds herself on the streets of London alone she meets Jasper and Horace. Two kids that grew up on the streets. Together they become friends and Jasper and Horace help her to find her way on the streets.
It’s Horace and Jasper who stand by her through the good and bad.
In life, it’s sometimes our truest friends that become our closest family. They are the ones who cheer for us, call us out on our BS, and generally support us in all we do. It goes back to the saying friends are the family you choose.
Lesson 3 ~ Don’t Let Your Past Define You
From the very beginning, Cruella had obstacles to overcome. A child of a single, working-class parent the odds were against her to fulfill her dreams. Add to that being left alone at a young age and the mountain seems too large to climb.
However, Cruella did not let her past stop her from fulfilling her dreams. No, she saw what had been laid before her and chose to succeed anyways. She may not have done it the way people thought she should but she made her own path and built the life she wanted.
For many years I let my chronic illness and the things I lost define who I was. However, I took notes from Cruella and realized I could and would achieve the life I wanted I would just do it my way. It’s not what happens to you in the past that defines you it’s how you chose to handle it and make it into something amazing.
Lesson 4 ~ Never Give Up On Your Dreams
To say Cruella gets knocked down a time or two is an understatement. In fact, at one point she is drenched in the garbage, cover in the stench of rotten food, and fired from the one job that could help get her to her dream. For many of us, we would have gone home. Curled up with a pint of ice cream and either cried or bemoaned our circumstances.
Not Cruella at that moment at her lowest is when her true brilliance shined through. She took a moment when she was at her lowest and turned into something great. It’s a quality she showed over and over again. Every time she got knocked down she would get back up and try again.
Cruella teaches us that it is truly not how many times you get knocked down that counts it how many times you stand back up. She teaches us to preserve and to never give up no matter how many times we fall or are told no. Our Dreams are worth the fight.
