One of my favorite things to do at Disney World is spending some time away from the parks.
Ideally, there are some parks I’d spend multiple days in as long as I had the budget to do it all.
But whether I have four days or ten days, I value the opportunity to take a little bit of time to
enjoy the recreational activities and the other beautiful qualities outside of the parks at Walt
If you have a longer stay and can give yourself a rest from the theme park activity, plan for a
a couple of days to rest, recharge, and enjoy the other things to do at Disney World that don’t
require a theme park admission.
The first thing you must make time for as you plan your Disney World vacation is Disney
Springs. This place is huge and it is packed with dining and entertainment for the whole family.
There are also several places to shop for Disney and non-Disney merchandise. If you don’t plot
out time for this place, you will feel overwhelmed by it when you arrive, but if you give yourself
time and perhaps make some dinner plans, you will enjoy this remarkable space. At Disney
Springs you can experience virtual reality, fly in a helium balloon, ride a water taxi, or live the
dream of being an NBA player. Disney Springs is a good place to head to for a nice dinner after
a day in the park.
Walt Disney WOrld is a great place for golf. There are three professional golf courses that are
challenging and immensely satisfying. Disney also has a nine-hole golf course near the
Polynesian Village resort that is ideal for families. This course also includes the option to play
FootGolf, which is an exciting hybrid of soccer and golf. The holes are modified to fit the size of
the ball. It’s great fun to kick your way around the course and practice both your power and
If hitting the fairway isn’t your thing, there are two miniature golf courses full of Disney fun to
discover as well. Fantasia Gardens is near Epcot and Winter Summerland is right near Blizzard
Tours and Events
You don’t have to be in a Disney park to experience a guided tour or participate in a magical
event. There are plenty of extras you can schedule on your trip to the various resort hotels.
Animal Kingdom Lodge has several activities and tours. Many are free. Some are priceless.
With Sense of Africa, you can tour the hotel and learn about the inspiration behind its design,
indulge in a buffet breakfast, and then go out on safari for an up-close encounter with the
animals. Resorts offer all kinds of experiences, such as the Archery Experience at Fort
Wilderness. Check your hotel for similar offerings and see what’s happening nearby. Movies
Under the Stars is a free nightly event around the Disney resort hotels.
For guests at the Polynesian Village, Grand Floridian, and the Contemporary, the monorail loop
is one of the best things to do at Disney World. Guests come from all over to ride the monorail
to all of the Seven Seas Lagoon hotels. You can stop for your own self-guided tours, or enjoy a
progressive dinner. You can even try out the lounges at each of the hotels. If you have the
budget, one of the most fun things to do at Disney World is the Highway in the Sky Dine-along.
It includes five dining courses and ends with a special viewing of the fireworks from the
